Brewing coffee at home is a journey. Whether you’re using a $10 dripper or a $3000 espresso machine, the fundamentals remain the same.

1. Buy Fresh Beans

Coffee is a fresh product. Look for a “Roast Date” rather than a “Best Before” date. Ideally, use beans between 7 and 21 days after roasting.

2. Grind Just Before Brewing

Once coffee is ground, the surface area increases exponentially, leading to rapid oxidation. Grinding fresh preserves the volatile aromatics that give coffee its flavor.

3. Use Filtered Water

A cup of coffee is 98-99% water. If your water tastes bad, your coffee will taste bad. Use a simple charcoal filter (like a Brita) at the very least.

4. Master Your Ratio

As we’ve discussed in our other posts, the ratio is the foundation of your brew. Use a scale!

5. Clean Your Equipment

Old coffee oils turn rancid. Ensure your brewer, carafe, and grinder are cleaned regularly.

Conclusion

Better coffee doesn’t always mean more expensive equipment. Focus on the variables you can control—freshness, water quality, and ratio—and you’ll see a massive improvement in your cup.
