V60 vs Chemex Ratios: What's the Difference?

Both are pour-overs, but they require different approaches. Learn how to optimize your ratio for the Hario V60 and the Chemex.

v60 chemex comparison

While both the V60 and Chemex are “pour-over” brewers, the experience and resulting cup are quite different. Much of this comes down to the filter thickness and the shape of the brewer.

The Hario V60: Precision and Clarity

The V60 has a 60-degree angle and internal ribs that promote airflow. The filters are relatively thin.

Recommended Ratio: 1:15 Because the V60 allows for faster drainage, a slightly tighter ratio (more coffee) often helps provide the body that the thin filters might otherwise lack.

The Chemex: Clean and Elegant

The Chemex is famous for its thick, heavy-duty paper filters. These filters remove almost all oils and sediment, resulting in an incredibly clean cup.

Recommended Ratio: 1:16 or 1:17 Since the Chemex filters are so thick, they slow down the brew time. Using a slightly wider ratio prevents over-extraction that can occur if the water stays in contact with the grounds for too long.

Key Differences

  1. Body: V60 has more body; Chemex is cleaner.
  2. Grind Size: Chemex usually requires a coarser grind than V60.
  3. Filter: The filter is the biggest differentiator.

Which one should you choose?

If you like bright, tea-like coffee, go with the Chemex at 1:17. If you prefer a bit more intensity and nuance, the V60 at 1:15 is your best bet.
